logo-lgcThe Local Government Commission (lgc.org) is a nonprofit organization fostering innovation in environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and social equity. The LGC is helping to transform communities through inspiration, practical assistance and a network of visionary city, county and regional leaders. Since 1979, the LGC has been a pioneer fostering innovative local approaches to improving communities.

In 1991, the LGC developed the Ahwahnee Principles for Resource-Efficient Communities, which helped pave the way for the smart growth movement, and has since worked to build awareness about the impact that land-use decisions have on transportation, public health, energy, climate change and fiscal strength. The Ahwahnee Principles call for a diverse and balanced mix of housing, jobs, businesses and recreational activities located within easy walking distance of one another and within regions that preserve agricultural lands and open space.
